An Update of Sorts...

I left Long Island at 8:00 this morning in a Kia Sorrento rental car. First thing I did when I got in the car was swab down the steering wheel and handles and buttons with hand sanitizer. Since I would be using toll roads, I asked the rental guy if the car had a EZ Pass thingy. It did not, but he said it’s all pay by plate (license plate) anyway, and a bill would be sent to Enterprise that would then be charged to my card. Yeah...not so much. It was okay, I just paid cash when required. There was only one place where I had to do a quick lane change to get into a cash lane. Otherwise, the drive was not bad at all.

I decided to call it a day, after a little over 500 miles, in Henderson, North Carolina. I have 400 miles tomorrow. I’m going to get an early start to try to get to Dawsonville, GA around 1:00. My new friend, and Trail Angel, Lydia, will pick me up at the Enterprise rental place in Dawsonville. Then, we will drive to Amicalola to get my thru-hiker hang tag, and do the orientation to get the tag. Then she will take me to the hostel in Dahlonega (yes, they are open, and I am the only woman registered in the women’s bunk room). The next morning, I will shuttle to the trail, and start hiking. I will be sure to keep my distance from other hikers, and won’t go near the shelters, unless no one else is there. At this time, while official statements are saying resupply could be difficult, reports from those out on the trail say there are several Trail Angels making sure hikers are still getting what they need.

I still feel like the woods is the best place to be, but I admit, if I was still in Washington, I probably would have postponed until a little later. Mostly, I would not have wanted to fly. Next post might be tomorrow night.
