Day 71-A Bit of Fatigue Setting In

Image
May 28-15 miles-Glasgow Shelter to campsite by the Pedlar River Bridge-AT mile approximately 802.3 Before I get into today, here’s a few photos from the shelter in Glasgow.  This is the shower that Siddhartha and Boomerang rigged up. It’s a picnic table turned on end, and a cooler that they filled with water, then added hot rocks from the fire to heat the water. They also rigged a shower curtain from a big piece of plastic tarp. The water came out from the drain plug. Garlic and Siddhartha said it was awesome. Hiker ingenuity right there! The bunks were pretty sarcophagus-like. You had to be careful not to bump your head.  The guy from Stanimals came near 7:30 to shuttle us back to the trail. As I was crossing the road I saw this weird creepy crawler.  It was about 3 inches long.  Right out of the gate we had a long climb (but that’s usually the case). I’d put my waterproof socks on because we had had a lot of rain overnight. Turns out all it did was make my feet really hot. At our fir

Day 70-Back to Rain, But at Least it’s Warm

May 27-14.8 miles-Thunder Hill Shelter to Glasgow Shelter-AT mile 787.3 The sun was nice...while it lasted. Today was back to rain. But, it was not cold, and we were coming into the town of Glasgow.  We hit the trail fairly early, so we could get to town early. I didn’t take many photos, but I saw four of my little orange friends.  This one is on moss (I’m collecting photos of my little orange friends on different surfaces).  We only crossed the BRP once today. Near the crossing was the Thunder Ridge Lookout.  The non-view view.  I caught up to Dusty, and we decided we would go to the Glasgow Shelter instead of Stanimals Hostel. The hostel seemed to be doing a bit of price gouging.  We hiked together to Matt’s Creek Shelter to eat some lunch. Sure Foot caught up to us just after we reached the shelter. It was at the shelter that we realized we only had 2.3 miles to go, and no climbing. Now, one might think, yay, but it also meant we no longer had cell service. We needed cell service to

Day 69-We Saw a Deer!!!...

May 26-14 miles-Middle Creek Canpground to Thunder Hill Shelter-AT mile 772.5 ...oh, and three bears!  But first, this morning...when I woke up, there was Amanda’s tent and car! She made it! We were all so happy to see her, even the guys who don’t know her, because she brought a ton of trail magic. She had a big bag full of chips, cookies, pop tarts, fruit snacks, you name it! After catching up, we packed our stuff, and Amanda shuttled is back to the trail. We’ll see her tomorrow in Glasgow.  Music Man, Sure Foot and I crammed into the back of Amanda’s car (with our packs on our laps). Amanda and I.  Today was just 14 miles, but we all agreed it was a challenging day. Sure Foot, the elevation guy, said we did a total of over 6000 feet of elevation gain. No wonder my feet and legs are tired! Not long after getting back on the trail, a deer went bounding across the trail in front of me. Then it stopped and looked back. I said, “I see you over there!” I didn’t take a photo because it was

Day 68-No Views Today, but Good Food and a Campground Stay

May 25-9.7 miles-Bobblets Gap Shelter to Middle Creek Campground- AT mile 758.5 Happy Memorial Day! As long as yesterday’s hike was, today’s was nearly half as long. Since it was completely socked in, the destination was the goal. Still, we crossed the BRP twice at overlooks. Here were the views.  There “otter” been a view here... Yep, no view here either.  We hoofed it down the trail pretty quickly (by quickly, I mean I was the slowest, and Dusty and Sure Foot went quickly). I did get a few photos here and there.  Third crossing of the Parkway.  Rhodies in the fog Another one of my little friends... We popped out on VA 614 about 11:00. Dusty had already called to have the campground shuttle come pick us up. The gal arrived in a pickup. We piled in the back with our packs for the 5 minute drive to Middle Creek Campground.  Hang on! First thing we did when we got here was get some food. They served breakfast all day, so I had French toast and bacon. Dusty had a black bean burger, and Su
