In Case You Are Wondering...
Me here at Super Hiker Woman just wanted to let all my not so many readers know what I’m doing during this annoying time of novel COVID 19.
First of all, my plan to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail is alive and disinfected. I’m taking hand washing to such a level that the skin is looking much younger from all the exfoliating I’ve been doing...an added bonus, for sure!
What has changed, as of this morning, is the way in which I will be getting to the Trail. After much hemming and hawing, I’ve decided to rent a car and drive from here to Georgia. This way, I don’t have to worry that my flight to Atlanta from JFK is going to be cancelled (a very real possibility), and I decrease my exposure to virus-filled (maybe) airports and public transportation.
Just how far is it, you ask? According to Google Maps, it is approximately 14 1/2 hours to Dawsonville, GA. While I will be staying in Dahlonega, GA the night before I go to Amicalola Falls State Park, the nearest town I can return the car is Dawsonville. It’s not far from Dahlonega, but I still needed a ride to the hostel. Enter Lydia, just about the nicest person on the planet. She was going to shuttle me to Dahlonega from North Springs, but said it was no problem driving me to Dahlonega from Dawsonville. How great is that?
I could have just stayed in Dawsonville, and Lydia would have taken me to Amicalola, but my hostel reservation, and shuttle to Amicalola were not refundable. Since the car rental is literally costing me 6 times as much as my flight was, I thought I’d better try to not lose anymore money. At least my flight cost is not lost. I will be able to use it at a later date (like toward my flight home at the end).
So, I’m leaving Long Island next Tuesday, and will get as far as I can the first day, stay in a hotel, then get to Dawsonville on the 18th. Lydia will pick me up at Enterprise, and drive me to Dahlonega. The hostel will shuttle me to Amicalola on the 19th, and I will start the Approach Trail.
Me here at Super Hiker Woman thank you for your patience during this weird time.
*I was going to include a photo of toilet paper, but...there were none to be had.
