Day 15-A Bald Sort of Day

Today we climbed two balds. The first was Siler Bald. The AT didn’t go directly over Siler. It was a .2 mile hike up off trail to the top of the bald. Since it was a beautiful sunny (but still chilly, with patches of snow and frost in the shady places) day, we dropped our packs, and hiked up to the top. Of course the view was pretty awesome, but the cool thing was that we could see the next bald we were hiking to, Wayah Bald. It looked so far away, but was actually just 6.9 trail miles.

Wayah Bald Tower across the way.

The climb up to Wayah Bald was pretty long. Actually, we went up a bunch, came down a bunch, before going all the way back up to Wayah Bald. We popped out to a paved path that led to the tower at the top. We had met a few other hikers along the way. “Can do”, “Potholder”, and “Karma”. Potholder and Karma got to the top shortly after we did. We didn’t see Can do until the shelter. He’s 73 years old and was born in the town Sure Foot is from in Massachusetts. Small world!

At Wayah Bald the views were great because in the tower there were signs telling what we were looking at. Way off in the distance we could see the tower on top of Albert Mtn that we had been up a couple of days ago. It’s crazy to look out how far it is, and realize we have walked from there!

That’s Albert Mtn Tower!

Flat Will makes it up another tower!

We made it to the Wayah Shelter just before 5:00. The three other guys came in a bit later. Nice guys.
