Day 30-Just Call Us the Geritol Posse

April 17-5.8 miles-AT mile post 317.3

Well, I’ll tell ya, it was a cold night in the bunkhouse last night. The road we walked down to the hostel was called Rector Laurel Rd, but I kept calling it, accidentally, “Rectal Laurel Rd”. Turns out, as hostels go, “Rectal” was perhaps a more fitting name after all. At least I got a shower. Last night we dubbed us three the Geritol Posse. After all, we seem to be the only ones over 55 out here!

Since we only had 5.8 miles today, we waited for it to warm up a bit. We got going at 9:30. Back on the trail, we started climbing right away. We climbed for a long time. We crossed  Sugarloaf Branch several times. Here was a nice waterfall.

After we passed all the water sources listed in the Guthook app, Sure Foot realized he hadn’t filled his water at the hostel. Fortunately, we came to another little creek. He had to get a little creative to get the water.

He’s using a ziplock bag to divert the water into his bag. Clever!

We finally managed to get to the first top. We were eventually rewarded with some nice views.

We stopped for lunch at Big Flat campsite which is where we had planned to camp before we found out the hostel was open. It was neither big, or flat, but it served us well for lunch. A young gal named Alecia, and her dog Chloe joined us. Alecia was hiking from Hot Springs to Sam’s Gap. She would finish today. She said she had seen Primo, Boston, and Veg at the hostel. I’d gotten a message from Primo that they were going to shower and get right back on trail. They should be here at Hogback Ridge Shelter tonight!

It did warm up to the mid-60s, which meant the stinky pink shirt came out today. Looks like rain starting in the middle of the night tonight.
