Day 51-The Joy of Town Chores

May 8-zero day-Travel Inn in Marion, VA

It was a pretty good day for a zero as it has rained since about 11:00, and it is pretty cold. Last night, we ended up giving up on the dryer being fixed, and brought our clothes back to the room to dry, hanging in various places. Everything was dry this morning. The town chore of laundry was complete. 

Last night while Sure Foot walked up to the Ingles to get dinner and breakfast food, I called the nearby Mexican restaurant and ordered takeout (interesting to call a restaurant that doesn’t have a website and order food without a menu...uh...do you have chimichangas? Do you have horchata? Yes? Great, I’ll have that!). Walked up, picked up the food, and brought it back to the hotel. 

That’s a lot of food! I was quite full!

This morning, since I hadn’t gone to Ingles last night, I walked up and got food for breakfast and lunch. This is where I try to eat as much perishable food as possible (salad, fruit, etc). I came back, ate my breakfast, then went back to Ingles to get my resupply for the next 5 days (minus a breakfast and a dinner). I didn’t get it all the first trip, because I couldn’t carry it all (plus, it’s easier to separate the town food from the trail food). 

Near the hotel, and on the way to the grocery store, is this nice greenway of trees. 

Back to the hotel with the resupply, next comes the repackaging of stuff. I even went all out and got new gallon ziplock freezer bags to replace my well worn ones (nearly two months use is pretty good, I think)! 

Everything repackaged, the last chore is to eat. Sure Foot has taken this to heart, and been eating all the extra food he got (sometimes it’s hard to get the right amount for the days needed...you can either carry the extra food, or just eat it). I have dinner for tonight (chicken pot pie-cook in the microwave), and breakfast for tomorrow (yogurt, smoothie, cherry turnover, and banana). I also have a few more blueberries I need to eat. 

Weather is supposed to clear up by tomorrow. We’ll be back on trail for another 5 days. Oh, and we got some great news! Dusty, who we met just before Hampton, TN, is going to join us in Pearisburg, and hike with us to McAfee Knob! So looking forward to hiking with her again!

June 21-15ish miles-Pine Grove Furnace to campsite-AT mile 1120 Last night Dusty and I made a “card” for Sure Foot for Father’s Day (except we said Happy Farter’s Day because...well...you can probably guess). I had breakfast at the hostel. The pancakes I had were...solid...kind of hard like a frisbee. But, I also had some yogurt and orange juice. I mean...it was only $5.00, so I can’t complain too much. Day 35-A Spot of Beauty, and Adding Pee Bottle

April 22-12.9 miles-Curley Maple Gap Shelter to Cherry Gap Shelter-AT mile 361.4 Today was one of our longer days with two major climbs. I got going at 7:50, and Sure Foot was just a few behind me. Before I left, I heard Tic Tac telling Papa Smurf and Pee Bottle that they should hike together, and she would just go slow what with her shin splint not doing well.  Sure Foot caught up to me before too long, and we continued on. Just after Indian Grave Gap (didn’t see any grave), we stopped for a break. We were 4.6 miles in, and it was about 10:30. While we were eating our snacks, Pee Bottle came walking up the trail. He said he’d been trying to catch us, and that Tic Tac and Papa Smurf were going to get a ride to Roan Mtn (the town), and would wait for Pee Bottle there. 129-Back to Mosquito Land...uh...I Mean the Trail

July 25-11.7 miles-Great Barrington to Wilcox South Shelters-AT mile 1535.5 We actually planned to go to the Wilcox North Shelter, but decided we didn’t want to carry extra water for 1.8 miles up and over Mt. Wilcox. But, more on that in a moment.  Roger and Sandy took us back to the trail at 7:30 this morning. We took photos, and said our “see you laters”, then started walking.  Photo courtesy of Sure Foot.  The first bit seemed to just wind around corn fields and along the river.  Oh yeah, it was foggy.  We went out to a road, and across a bridge, just to get to the other side of the river, then seemingly made a u-turn, and went back along the river.
