Day 58-Short on Miles, But Long on Views
May 15-8.4 miles-Doc’s Knob Shelter to Angel’s Rest Hiker Haven in Pearisburg-AT Mile 636.1

This is only the second deer I’ve seen. I’m sure many more have seen me.

The New River.

Oh, and another Scarlett Tanager.

Pearisburg down below.

And, of course, Flat Will.

It made him very nervous.

Walking through big rocks.

This looked like a good place to get out of the rain (if it was raining).

Another view down to Pearisburg.

Sure Foot asked me if this was one of those places where you could fall to your death. I said he probably could.

We left our packs here to walk the trail out to Angel’s Rest Rock. Then when we came back, we decided it was a good place for lunch.

The birds woke me up this morning at 5:45. I swear they were having a convention right above my tent! Since I’d slept pretty good (even though I was on a sideways slope), I just got up, and started packing.
About a half hour into today’s hike I changed into my stinky pink shirt. It was another nice day! The trail wasn’t too bad. Well, there were rocks here and there, but not quite as bad as yesterday. When I stopped to take off my hoody, I saw this doe.

Today was a day for views. The first was the View to the Pearis Valley on one side, and a view of the New River on the other side. It was where the power lines went over the ridge.

Next up was the Pearis Ledges with an even more spectacular view of the Pearis Valley.

I got Sure Foot to take this phot of me on the precipice of death.
It made him very nervous.
Then, in another .7 miles, we came to Angel’s Rest Rock.

From Angel’s Rest Rock it was all downhill to Cross Avenue where we would be picked up by Doc, the owner of Angel’s Rest Hiker Haven. First thing she did was wash our hands. The reason is because of the virus, which I think is interesting, since it’s unlikely we would carry the virus out of the woods. However, it felt great, so I’m not complaining!
Doc gave us the tour of Pearisburg as we came into town. As we pulled up to the hostel, I got to meet Pringles (whose YouTube videos I watched last year of her hike on the AT). She gave us the tour, and checked us in.

Sure Foot and I are in the bunkhouse with Hippy and his dog Haywood, who we met on the trail a couple of days ago.
I took a shower, and noticed the undershave of my hair has gotten so long it’s sticking out like wings. I asked Pringles if they had any clippers. She did, so I borrowed them, and had Hippy redo my undershave. Then I shaved Sure Foot’s head (he did his own beard). Feels so much better!
We did some laundry, then walked into town to get some food. We got some food for breakfast at the Food Lion, then went to Dairy Queen for some dinner.
We’ve arranged for the hostel to resupply us the morning of our 4th day from here. We’ll get the food, leave it here, then Doc or Pringles will shuttle it to us. It was that, or carry 6 days of food (which we could do, but would rather not).
We’ll take a zero here tomorrow. Dusty will join us tomorrow afternoon, and we’ll head out together on Sunday.
