Day 61-A Sweatifying Day

May 18-16.4 miles-Rice Field Shelter to Bailey Gap Shelter-AT mile 660.6

Last night’s sunset.

Whoa, the wind absolutely howled last night! My stake on the vestibule got pulled out. I poached rocks from the fire ring to anchor it down. At one point, the fog rolled in, but the wind was still blowing like mad!

Dusty was up at the pre-butt crack of dawn. She packed up and headed out. Sure Foot was even up early and on trail first. Of course we had 16.4 miles to do, and he still needs to be cautious with his shin, although it is getting better.

I finally got my stuff packed up, thinking it must be 8:00. But no, it was only 7:15! Here’s what the valley looked like this morning.

And the trail.

Here’s the trail later.

It was clearing up and heating up.

The trail wasn’t too difficult as we were on the ridge for a long time. As we came off the ridge, I finally got a photo of one of the blue and black butterflies.

Aways further, I could hear panting behind me. It was Roo Dog.

Roo Dog on the trail taking care of business.

We came to a creek.

I was jealous.

Satiated with a ton of water, I continued on. 4.5 miles to go. After we went across this bridge,

It was steep uphill the whole rest of the way to the shelter. We also had to stop .2 from the shelter to walk .1 down a steep trail to get water as ther is no water source at the shelter.

There is also not much in the way of tent spaces at the shelter. So...tonight is my first night sleeping in the shelter. Dusty and Biscuit (and Roo Dog) are also in the shelter. And, it’s raining. Sure Foot managed to eke out a tent spot. Dusty and I have tied our Ursacks to trees. Biscuit just finished eating in the shelter. Hopefully, if there are mice, they will go to Biscuit’s side. But with Roo Dog, maybe we won’t have a mouse visit.

Goodnight from Bailey Gap Shelter.
