Day 72-The Bald That Wasn’t, and the Mountain That Was

May 29-13.2 miles-Pedlar Bridge to Hog Camp campsite-AT mile 815.4

Had a really great night’s sleep! Felt 100% better this morning. The humidity was through the roof, though. We didn’t think it could be more humid than yesterday, but it was.

We got on trail at 6:45. The first few miles were pretty nice trail, but we were sweating like crazy.

Okay, this part was not good!

Thanks to Dusty for these lovely photos.

Once we got to Brown Mtn Creek, it was very nice along the creek. There used to be a town.

After we left the creek, we started the 3 1/2 mile climb up to Bald Knob, not actually bald (that’s what the guide book says). About a 1/2 mile in, I came to Hwy 60. Dusty was sitting at a picnic table with a gal named Monarch. I was happy to take my pack off and have a snack.

Hoofing it across the Hwy. Photo by Dusty!

It was a good thing because the climb continued on for what seemed like forever! We were going to eat lunch at the top of Bald Knob, not actually bald, but .7 from the top Dusty said she needed to eat lunch. I was more than happy to oblige!

So, Music Man lost his Croc in the creek. Another hiker had retrieved it and was bringing it up to Monarch. When he arrived, Dusty said she would take it to Music Man. While we were eating lunch, Music Man came walking up. Notice his Croc sitting on Dusty’s knee.

After lunch we finished the climb. There was a nice view.

Mountains of green.

Bald Knob was indeed not bald. However, we came down Bald Knob, then climbed up again and came out to this.

This was Coal Mtn, and it was a Bald!

We made our way down to Hog Camp campsite, our destination for the day. It’s a meadow with a spring .3 from the meadow. That’s a bit of a walk for a water source, but the water was good.

We had met a couple of women, Mary and Margaret, who are section hiking. We got them to take a photo of the three of us, Boomerang, Garlic, and Music Man.

Garlic and Boomerang were going to hike on, but them and Music Man decided to camp with us tonight. We’ve had a great afternoon and evening.

The only tent you can’t see is Garlic’s.

Of course, I took some pics of my little orange friends.

Tomorrow we head to a campground with a grocery store. We have to get a resupply for 3 1/2 days.
