Day 82-Sunrise on Hawksbill

June 8-14.1 miles plus .7 from Hawksbill-Hawksbill Summit to Pass Mtn Hut-AT mile 945.6

Dusty got too cold in the wind cowboy camping, so she joined me in the shelter. Sure Foot stayed out the whole night (but he has a heavier sleeping bag).

Dusty woke me at the pre-butt crack hour of 5:00 with, “Two Wheels wake up, the sun is coming up!” I hobbled my way up to the summit. Here’s some photos

A little yoga to lube the muscles.

Dusty in tree pose.

See? Still dark!

Good morning!

We packed up our stuff.

Things were less than organized, due to our late night.

Dusty and Sure Foot headed out before me. We had to go back down the mountain for .7 to get back to the AT.

There were more rocks than I would have liked today, but there’s nothing I can do about it except go slow and be careful.

I still hate them.

I came out to Skyland wayside. I was able to dump my trash. Then I saw there was an AT detour. Fortunately, I took a photo of the map.

It was a little funky, and not the easiest to follow. I went the wrong way twice.

First a road walk

Then some paved trail

Finally back to the AT.

After I got back on the trail it climbed. There were some lovely cliffs looking down into the valley.

I met up with Dusty and Sure Foot at the Pinnacles Picnic ground. This time the water was on!

The toilets were still closed (water spigot is behind the toilet).

I met up with Sure Foot just before Mary’s Rock. It was a .1 side trail. We dropped our packs and went up.

Soon (but not soon enough...the descent was nasty with rocks), I would be down to that road!

When I got down to the road, I took a break before the last push to the hut. It was a good idea because I was able to finish strong. We all cleaned up after the sweaty day. It felt good to be clean!!!

Just a day and a half more, and we’ll be out of Shenandoah National Park.
