Day 85-We Liked Jim and Molly So Much, We Stayed

June 11-5.2 miles-Front Royal to Jim and Molly Denton Shelter-AT mile 977.3

Ahhh...a great night’s sleep does wonders! We returned to the trail around 8:00 with a 15 mile day planned. The trail was fairly easy, but I was soon back to hiking in a pool of sweat due to the humidity. So much for that shower!

Many wild strawberries today (but they don’t really have any flavor).

Somewhat uninspired trail, but I’m not complaining!

At 5.2 miles was the first shelter of the day. Both Guthook and AWOL list this shelter as on of the nicest ones on the trail. They weren’t kidding!

Notice the chairs!

Comfort!

Even horseshoes.

My entry in the shelter log.

Dusty and I were sitting in the chair, saying how nice this place was, and how we wished we were staying here. Then we looked at each other, and decided we could stay here! We quickly adjusted the plan to Harpers Ferry, and gave Sure Foot the good news. We are not, however, sleeping in the shelter itself tonight. I’ve been wanting to get back to my tent so I can sleep bug free. There are several tent sites around the shelter, so we’ve all set up our tents.

Home sweet home!

Tomorrow will be an 18 mile day, but the terrain is not terribly challenging.

Something I’ve been meaning to mention...
In the heat, I’ve been having problems with heat rash on my lower back. I’ve been using medicated lip balm (thank you Burt’s Bees), and it has kept it from getting worse. While I thought it was a pretty creative use of lip balm, I purchased some zinc oxide butt paste in Front Royal. Yeah, it’s gonna get everything it touches white, but better that than angry heat rash.
