Day 86-Hiking Through the Jungle
June 12-18.4 miles-Jim & Molly Denton Shelter to Rod Hollow Shelter-AT mile 996.1

Good trail

Through a mowed meadow

On a road

Through another meadow in Sky Meadow State Park

Crossing the highway (although, this was a bit dangerous)

Could we get a little trail maintenance please?

My foot for reference.

Some interesting history...I guess.
Today was long. Today was boring. While there were brief moments of good trail, the majority was overgrown, and rocky. It was like hiking through a jungle. These are the times it wasn’t.

Here’s one particularly nasty part.

It was also quite warm. I drank nearly 2 1/2 liters of water (which is a lot for me).
In the State Park there was a side trail that went out to a big meadow with views to the Washington DC Skyline. It was .4 off trail. Neither Sure Foot or I wanted to do the extra .8 mile. Dusty did though. Sure enough, she could see the DC Skyline. It’s one of the advantages of being able to hike fast.
I saw this huge moth on the trail. I thought it was dead, but it moved when I touched it with my pole.
My foot for reference.
I passed this sign.

We made it Rod Hollow Shelter. This is at the souther end of a section called the Rollercoaster. We’ll start it tomorrow.
I guess that’s it for today. I’m tired, so even though it’s only 7:15, I think I’ll go to sleep. Goodnight. Oh, and we’ve been seeing fireflies at night. I may not see them tonight...
