Day 92-Goodbye to the South!
June 18-13.2 miles-Raven Rock Shelter to Tumbling Run Shelters-AT mile 1075.3

These aren’t even the hard ones!

The view from Pen Mar Park.

Braids getting us all in! Sawdust, Dusty, me, and Sure Foot!
And, of course Flat Will and LB (notice how LB is already in PA? Flat Will is sort of straddling the border).

You can just see it slithering by the logs.

We are such hiker trash!

Goodbye to Maryland (can’t say I’ll miss ya), and hello to Pennsylvania...state number 7! I know there will be rocks, and I’ll try my best to have a better attitude about them (no promises).
After staying in the Raven Rock Shelter last night, listening to rain on the roof, we woke to mostly the wind blowing drops off the trees. I started out in my rain gear, but quickly took it off. We had some nasty boulders to descend. It’s very scary when they are wet.
These aren’t even the hard ones!
There was some confusion as to exactly how far it was to Pen Mar Park. Guthook said it was 6 miles, AWOL said 4.2. Either I sprouted wings and flew, or Guthook was wrong, and AWOL was right, because I got to Pen Mar in just over 2 hours. I don’t recall doing any flying...

Then, there was some confusion as to where we were going to be picked up to shuttle into Waynesboro, PA for our resupply. Once we figured that out, we continued on to...THE MASON DIXON LINE!

And, of course Flat Will and LB (notice how LB is already in PA? Flat Will is sort of straddling the border).
We arrived at the pick up point at about 10:45. Along the way I saw yet another black snake. I only saw one snake in Virginia, none in West Virginia, one in Maryland, and I’m hoping this is the only one I’ll see in Pennsylvania.

Emory picked the five of us up at PA 16 at 11:30, and took us to the Waynesboro Walmart so we could resupply for the next 2 1/2 days. We also got lunch at the Subway (checked off a PA Subway!). Since PA has not opened seating in restaurants yet, we took our sandwiches outside.

We got back in Emory’s car and went to the hotel to drop off Sawdust (he was spending the night), then to the Post Office so Sure Foot could pick up a package.

We went back to Walmart because Braids forgot to get something she needed, then back to the trail. All this took just two hours!
We were going to go just to the next shelter, but we realized we could make it easily to the following shelter that was just 5.9 miles. It was pretty easy trail.
Took a little break here.
Tumbling Run Shelters (yes, there are two) have a caretaker that has been taking care of this shelter since 1996. They are the only double shelters that have one shelter for snorers, and one for non-snorers.

While the shelters are quite nice, Dusty is the only one of the four of us actually sleeping in the shelter tonight. There might be rain tonight, but I just get too hot in my quilt in the shelter, so I’m in my tent (where I can throw my quilt off of me, and not get bit by any bugs).
Tomorrow we have scheduled ourselves a long day (19.6), so I’d better get to sleep. Goodnight from Pennsylvania!
