The Real Day 95-Just Taking My Food for a Walk

June 21-15ish miles-Pine Grove Furnace to campsite-AT mile 1120

Last night Dusty and I made a “card” for Sure Foot for Father’s Day (except we said Happy Farter’s Day because...well...you can probably guess). I had breakfast at the hostel. The pancakes I had were...solid...kind of hard like a frisbee. But, I also had some yogurt and orange juice. I mean...it was only $5.00, so I can’t complain too much. Strangely, someone had stolen the eggs and bacon (uncooked), and a plate. It was weird...

The first part of the day was pretty easy. Getting out of Pine Grove State Park was a flat bike path. We went by Fuller Lake.

Fuller Lake in the fog...eerie.

I met two women who were just out for a short hike. I walked with them until the AT turned off the path.

Barb and Becky. Nice gals!

The AT climbed for awhile, but it wasn’t a steep climb. Braids and I caught up to Dusty and Sure Foot at a creek. We were just about a mile from the Green Mtn grocery store. Dusty asked if we were going to go to the store. I said, “ Hell, yeah!” I really wanted something cold to drink that wasn’t water.

We got to the store (only a .2 road walk to this one) about 11:15. Well, that was close enough for lunch as far as we all were concerned! Red Baron was there too. I had a BBQ Pork sub. It was delicious! I also had a Dr. Pepper and a Coconut Bai. There were some local baked goods, so I had to try them too. Needless to say, as we left Green Mtn Grocery, I was pretty full, yet my pack wasn’t any lighter because I have not been eating the food I’m carrying. I seem to just be taking it for a walk.

Yum!

The afternoon was much slower. The trail was rocky, and there were a couple of “rock mazes”, some of which was gratuitous (I could totally see a trail around the big rocks, but I followed the white blazes).

To get up that rock that has the white blaze, I had to take my pack off and throw it up, then pull myself up.

It was not easy, but it was kind of fun (or at least interesting). After the mazes, the trail remained pretty rocky which made for slow going. Fortunately, it was just a 15 mile day. Tonight we are camped by a creek at a campsite not far from the Alec Kennedy Shelter. We would have gone to the shelter, but it is reported that there isn’t any good tent sites.

Nice campsite!

There are 6 of us here tonight. Me, Sure Foot, Dusty, Braids, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear (mother and daughter). I call Mama Bear and Baby Bear “Da Bears!”

Tomorrow we go into Boiling Springs. I don’t think I need to get any food! I need to eat what I have!!! But, I’ll probably end up getting something...
