Day 123-A Scorcher of a Day

July 19-13.5 miles-Schaghticoke campsite to Silver Hill Campsite-AT mile1480.4

It’s been 4 months since we left Amicalola. Here’s a look back.

So full of excitement that day.

Four months later, and we’re still going. I haven’t worn that hoody for weeks now. Probably won’t for awhile longer.

Today was 95 degrees. At least the humidity wasn’t too high. Still, it was a sweat-fest. Both Sure Foot and I drank tons of water.

We had a few longer climbs, plus the little ones. The first longer one wasn’t even named. The second one was Caleb’s Peak.

Unknown peak

Caleb’s Peak. We ate lunch here, and Ultra and Harpo went by. Harpo played us a song on his harmonica. Fairweather caught up to me just after we left the peak.

Not long after Caleb’s Peak was St. John’s Ledges.

It was a little underwhelming.

The trickiest part of today was the descent from St. John’s Ledges. It was basically straight down for the first half mile.

There was some butt sliding involved, along with some toss the poles and hope they don’t go too far. It took awhile, but I made it down in one piece.

At the bottom, Harpo was there with his daughter, Emily. She was slackpacking him. She asked if we wanted some Gatorade. Of course we said yes! We each drank a 28 oz bottle. I also had a banana. It was unexpected, and much appreciated.

Harpo and Emily

From there, we had 5.6 miles, of which 4.8 was flat dirt trail/road.

We had .7 of this.

The Housatonic River was to our right for the flat section

This must be the “dirt path” Moose  was telling us about back in New Jersey. It is not even close to being “all of Connecticut”!

We got water at a piped spring .8 before Silver Hill Campsite (while the campsite has a functioning pump, it’s rusty colored). We made it to the campsite at 4:30.  It’s now 6:30, and it’s just barely starting to cool down. Me thinks I will not be using my quilt much tonight!
